Minutes include constitution and bylaws. Also included are photo-collage caricatures and printer's blocks for a private anniversary publication of the Society. There is a small group of papers from the Roman Medical Society found in this collection, as a number of NYMSS members also belonged to the Roman Society.

The Society was originally called the Medical Association of the New York Dispensary, founded in 1836. It lasted about a year and was disbanded and recreated as the present Society, allowing its members to belong not only to the Dispensary but also to other New York hospitals and medical schools.
